OUR HISTORY

1961

Founding Station Manager, Gary J. Sparaco, started WONY alongside the campus Radio Club, local broadcast engineer Bill Lare, and faculty advisor Dr. Stanley Weisberger. The station's first broadcast studios were on the 3rd floor of Old Main, and were set up during the winter holiday season of 1961.

WONY broadcasts for the first time in January 1962 on 620AM. 15 members ran the station in its first year [pictured], and the following years would grow into an organization of over 200 people, rapidly increasing in broadcasting bandwidth and campus influence.

After a successful first handful of years, WONY makes the switch from broadcasting on AM to the FM dial, originally on the 93.6 signal. The station was also made available on Oneonta Video Cable. With this expansion, the station began to gain noteriety and influence past SUCO's campus and out within the local Oneonta community.

Coming up on its 10-year anniversary, WONY's broadcast studios move from Old Main into Morris Hall in the break between the fall 1969 and spring 1970 semesters. The building was deemed a safer and more logical permanent location for the station's equipment setup.
